I have a some questions, suggestions, & criticism about the game. I would greatly appreciate a response. I may have to change some of this after the exploration update. I'm looking foward to it :)
Questions:
1. Who/what did the voice for the story? (It's really funny sounding right now, I crack up when ever I hear it.) 2. What determines an enemy's class? (Class, for example: tirgate, bomber, fighter, etc.) 3. Are there any unobtainable items? (Ex. Shieldstones & Glitched Tier Items) 4. What does durability do? 5. Some weapons, like the ternion go outside of the block they are on when rotating, is this intentional? 6. How are the costs of forging items together determined? 7. How many devs are there? Is it just you? 8. Why does the title of this game (IIslands of War) have 2 "I"'s?
Suggestions/Criticism:
1. Make certian tech equipment be unable to fuse into certian items. For example, infusing a ammo box with some weapons makes it basicly useless. So you would make it so that you can't fuse an ammo box with any weapons it makes basicly useless. Another example is, when you fuse some tech to something enough times, it will start to just add weight. You would make it so you can't continue to fuse that tech with the thing you have been fusing. (I believe the ammo box thing is a bug, it's been around for a long while) 2. A new mode. You would call the current mode freestyle (or something like that). I would like a mode where you can choose a class (Bomber, dreadnaught, trigate, fighter, frigate, etc.). The class you select would just affect the weapon loot table, making weapons/modules/tech that go with that class more common, and weapons/modules/tech that don't less common. For example, if you chose the bomber class, the spawn rates of crystors, (dual) mortars, & grenadors would increase, and the spawnrates of other weapons would go down. 3. Shops, the things they sell seems to be too expensive. Visiting the forge with $50 can help you more than visitng a shop with $100. I would lower the pricies in shops by at least half. I would also have an option to sell items in the shop for about half the cost of the item. 4. I would like some sort of shield block/module instead of a building. There is no reason not to have a shield block. If having shields only as buildings is part of the challenge, then I don't think anything should be changed. 5. Some instructions on how to get sandbox mode, there isn't any instructions in the "how to play" section. (Ik how btw) 6. We have various difficulties, there is Original, Heroic (Harder), & Godlike, (Even Harder), but there is no "Weakling" difficulty, no difficulty that makes the game easier rather than harder. I think some difficulty that makes the game easier should be added. 7. I do not have any suggestions on how to fix the abuse of enemy boosting unfortunatly.
(I hope this isn't too much text for you btw) I do not to make this game look bad or offend anyone. It's a great game, it's just it has some problems. I am merly giving some ideas to solve some of these problems. I do not care if any of these suggestions are implemented, or if any of my questions are answered, all I want is a message letting me know this was acknowledged.

Who did the voice for the story?
This game was initially made for a small 3 week game jam, so I did the voicing. The lore has changed during the development of the exploration update, so the cutscene has been removed.
What determines an enemy's class?
Well actually, enemy class is chosen first and then a bunch of items are selected based on that class and given to the island generator. I have reworked the enemy generator so that classes will have a specific set of items to choose from. This speeds up enemy generation and also gives me more control over difficulty.
Are there any unobtainable items?
Pink items are of the “glitched” rarity. These items are primarily designed for enemies to use and can only be obtained by hacking the game or going into sandbox(hold the spacebar when making a new game)
What does durability do?
Durability percentage affects how much collision damage the block will take. An item with no durability will take 100% collision damage while an item with 25% durability will only take 75% collision damage.
Some weapons, like the ternion go outside of the block they are on when rotating, is this intentional?
No this isnt intentional, but it happens. I don’t see this as a very big issue.
How are the costs of forging items together determined?
This has changed since the last public update, however it has to do with the value of your items and possibly rarity.
How many devs are there?
Its just me. The growing community on Discord keeps me going or else I would have dropped this game a long time ago.
Why does the title of this game (IIslands of War) have 2 "I"'s?
IIslands of War was entered for a game jam with the theme “Unnescesary Sequels”. A few years prior I had made a game called Islands of War, so naturally the second installment of this game had to have been called IIslands of War.

I see your point here. I recently updated some visuals with the forge so that if a tech is just useless, it will be highlighted red and a note is displayed saying the tech isnt doing anything. Could I just prevent you from putting in the item in the first place? Yeah, but if you wanna add mass to your island(for some strange reason) i gotte let you do that as well.
Make a new mode where you can choose a class and have it affect drop rates.
Interesting idea. I’m focusing on getting one good game mode out for now, so additional modes would be a long long way off(give it a few years).
Shops are pricey.
Yeah, they are. If you’ve played long enough, you will sometimes see an item going on a massive discount. But the price of choice is high. Thanks for bringing this up, I will take a second look at the prices nearing the end of the update.
Treasure doesn’t have amazing loot.
Treasure is a funny location because there is 0 risk and it always gives a reward. Usually, it should give worse loot with an occasional amazing item just so that you bever really know what you’re gonna get which adds to the fun.
Make a shield block/module.
Shields are an amazing item. They block projectile damage and can completely deny energy weapons. Making them a building forces you to strategically play around it. Its a massive weak spot and I intend to keep it that way. Also, enemies would be very very annoying if they got their hands on that.
Instructions on how to get sandbox mode.
Sandbox mode was initially only added for me to test out all the items without having to play the entire game. It was never really intended to be a full feature, and I think it spoils the whole fun of finding and exploring. That being said, I will probably only announce the sandbox mode officially when full support comes with it.
Weakling Difficulty
Thanks for this feedback. I will consider this when reinplementing the difficulty levels.
Enemy Boosting Abuse
Enemy boosting was one of those features that looked amazing on paper, but was able to be exploited miserably. This is still one of the game’s greatest problems. Enemy boosting has been removed entirely from the exploration update. One of the ways i have worked to combat kiting abuse is by adding in a complete relative velocity to the projectiles. This combined with a projectile life (measured in seconds) has helped a bit.

There are some items in the game that are seasonal event items. Shieldstones are apart of the Halloween season and will only drop during that time of the year. The only seasons with special items are currently Halloween and Christmas, but I totally want to add in more of them.

Congrats! There really isn't anything after you beat the final boss unfortunately. You can start a new sandbox game by holding .down space while making a new game.
Its me again! The guy that found the "falling exploit".
Must admit Mr. jwiggs that the last update has done mucho for the game. I love the new mechanics and the new forge.
I found another "strategy" to win the game easily. I noticed that now the enemies must "follow" you wherever you go so now i just get myself a great horizontal module early game and just fly all the time to the right (or left, the important of this strateggy relies on the side movement).
The enemy then will have to go for you being "pulled" by you. Bcs of your speed the enemy's bullets wont hurt you (maybe just the rockets) and you just have to aim "backwards" and the enemy will get all your bullets bcs its being pulled.
A posible bug is the ammo box. I "installed" two of those in a double rocket i have and now it will only shoot once in all the fights (then it will be freeced) :(
It is really nice to see players sticking around, even a while without updates.
Due to the lack of testing in the last update, the game has been extremely easy to beat by simply running away and firing backwards. This was not an intended play style and really takes away all the strategy elements of the game that make it really awesome.
Yes, I am also aware of some forging bugs that can occur when you use certain tech like the ammunition box or rocket propellant, and am actually working on forge changes this coming week, so I will bear it in mind.
If you thought the last update was awesome, this next update is going to blow your mind! Pretty much every system in the game has gotten an upgrade! Looking back its actually crazy how many changes there have been.

I had the exact same problem. I beat the game in under 3 hours, only lost one life, just by flying to the left. Instead of having the enemy get pulled to you, maybe they teleport to your left? Or just get pulled closer?
But still, I love what the last update brought to Islands of War, and I can't wait for the next one.
Hi, Mr. jwiggs. I found a small bug in the console, which is the game will break down if you only type "?"
Also, I have a not bad idea for a new weapon when I was playing with weapons' properties. If you make a weapon have a 'projectileknockback' with a negative number, the enemy will be pull towards your spacecraft. This kind of weapon will work well with spykes, and if the enemies equip this kind of weapon, the players will have so much ‘fun’ when fighting.
I think close combat type is not strong enough, especially in later realms.
One more thing to tell, the update called "enemy boosting" is great, but it will also lead an OP way (kiteflying) to play. Players can easily win any enemy by keep moving to the left and shooting to the right, in this way, an enemy can never hurt players, but players can still cause damage.
In the end, love this game a lot, and looking forward to next update. >_<
Thanks for your great feedback and the bug report! The console was built primarily as the start for giving players like you the ability to have more and more access to some developer tools (and also to give me access to them as well), and reverse recoil weapons are a great example of the console creating some interesting gameplay mechanics.
Enemy boosting was a good change from looping enemies, but unfortunately, it led to the extremely overpowered strategy where you can just run and kite the enemies indefinitely. I seriously overlooked the impact enemy boosts would have.
If you have any more ideas, the discord server is a great place to hear what other people are thinking as well, and I really rely on the community to help me guide the game in the best direction, especially as the next update is being developed.
I wish I could join the discord community, and I did try, however, Discord seems don’t work in China. So do you have other way to communicate you prefer? Like email?

Longer answer: The next update, the Exploration Update, has taken a few different directions as I have been working on it. I think I've finally figured out the best way to implement it, however it might be a month or more away from being released.
If you want to stay updated, you really should head over to the discord. I show development footage and you can even test the unstable versions of the game if you want.

If I do add another port for the game, Linux would be next. I can't guarantee it any time soon cuz I've never worked with it before and I don't have a linux yet, but I'll try when the game is in a more complete state.

So sorry to hear about your download taking so long. I'm not sure why your download is taking so long and it is probably an itch.io thing, but here is an alternate source from dropbox that you can try.
The game is free, so there shouldn't be any risk involved (except for maybe a few minutes of download). As for assurance that there is an actual game, yes, there is a game. A quick search on YouTube will easily confirm this.
Just wondering, what were your reasons for assuming that there wasn't an actual game? Because if there's something that I'm missing as a developer or a red flag that was set off for you, I would wanna hear about it.
Hey, you might remember me from some of the first days you put this amazing game up on itch. I reccomended some of the things you implemented or are implementing (wether i had any part in your decisions i have no idea). I would like to congratulate you on how far you've gotten so far. I would also like to reccomend a couple of things for when you release this on steam. I would appreciate it if you would make it so us poor people could get a copy of your game on steam somehow. I would also like it if you could, when the game is stable on steam, to add steam workshop on it, so we can see what things other people want to add to the game. I personally would be thrilled if you did these things, but if you don't want to, i understand completely. Keep doing you!
I have been working on the next big update! When I do end up releasing a Steam version, I definitely do not want to lose the awesome player who have been playing for free. More details will come as the time draws near, and I am thinking of giving out keys to everyone in the Discord server (another great reason to join).
As for the Steam Workshop / modding, I have plans to incorporate these in, especially since a lot of the work with the game console easily transfers over to adding in custom items and stuff.

Hello! The next update is going to be literally game changing and is probably even bigger than movement update last year. I am currently working on the game full time, and I am hoping to finish it around early October. You can play the early version of the game from the Discord server.
The game is actually starting to add some elements of survival, but not a full on game mode.
- and can you add some archived versions (eg first build - latest build)? I noticed an outdated version (which lead me here) and really enjoyed the idea!
- was this made in unity 2d? or another program?

Will I upload this to steam? The game is changing rapidly, and the next uupdate will be as game changing as the first movement update. I do want to publish this, however it could be a while.
Will this game always be free? I love free stuff, and good free games are hard to find. The steam version will probably not be free to play, however I fully intend to keep a playable, fun, and free version here on itch.io.
Can I add some archived versions? The legacy version has been made available. I currently am not handing out prior stable versions of the game, I will try and compile a list of decent game versions and then let be available to download. This will probably happen around the time of the Steam release.
How was this game made? This game was made in GameMaker Studio 2.
Will there ever be mod support? I do not see a full mod support system coming, but micro mod support, like editing items, islands, classes and smaller things like that are in mind. I have already begun giving more power to you all with the console, where you can create your own custom items out of the many many properties I have already defined.

I have received many many requests for this game to be translated into Chinese. When I do multiple language support (which is sadly a long way off), Chinese is the top language on my list.
Multiplayer could be interesting, but the core of the game is about to change once again, so multiplayer is also a long way off.
I just played through the game with a friend and I totally understand what you mean when you say the beginning of the game is hard. It very much is and I'm sorry I haven't balanced it quite well. However I have come up with solutions to directly address this issue for future updates.
More music and sound effects would be great, and I would love to polish up the game some more with a full soundtrack. I will do my best to add polish along the journey to completing the game.
More realms? While I do not think that more realms is the solution to a short gameplay experience, I have ideas to make the game more engaging in the long term. The final boss is a terrible design way of bringing the player back because there is literally nothing after you beat the boss.
Landing the game on steam? I have plans to publish this game, I am not quite sure on the timing.

You can delete items by selecting the item you want to delete and then right clicking the trash. If you want to spam delete that item, use shift + right click to quickly make the item count drop.
You can enter sandbox mode by holding down the spacebar while creating a new game. You can also open the console by pressing ` and then give yourself modified items.
You can use tech by infusing it into other items in the forge. Basically put the tech into one of the left item slots and the item you want to upgrade on the right slot. Then infuse them together and voila, your tech has been added.
hey uh dont label the game as playable in browser because thats a lie if you can turn that off it would be great but itch probably did that automatically so oh well

I've followed this game for 4 months,and I can just say:
This game is awesome!
But the godlike difficulty is too difficult! There is only few loot but the enemys are still as strong as those in other difficulties.

This kind of weapon will work well with spykes, and if the enemies equip this kind of weapon, the players will have so much ‘fun’ when fighting.
I think close combat type is not strong enough, especially in later realms.
One more thing to tell, the update called "enemy boosting" is great, but it will also lead an OP way (kiteflying) to play. Players can easily win any enemy by keep moving to the left and shooting to the right, in this way, an enemy can never hurt players, but players can still cause damage.
In the end, love this game a lot, and looking forward to next update. >_<

Thanks for your great feedback and the bug report! The console was built primarily as the start for giving players like you the ability to have more and more access to some developer tools (and also to give me access to them as well), and reverse recoil weapons are a great example of the console creating some interesting gameplay mechanics.
Enemy boosting was a good change from looping enemies, but unfortunately, it led to the extremely overpowered strategy where you can just run and kite the enemies indefinitely. I seriously overlooked the impact enemy boosts would have.
If you have any more ideas, the discord server is a great place to hear what other people are thinking as well, and I really rely on the community to help me guide the game in the best direction, especially as the next update is being developed.

Short answer: Yes, updates are on their way.
Longer answer: The next update, the Exploration Update, has taken a few different directions as I have been working on it. I think I've finally figured out the best way to implement it, however it might be a month or more away from being released.
If you want to stay updated, you really should head over to the discord. I show development footage and you can even test the unstable versions of the game if you want.

The game is free, so there shouldn't be any risk involved (except for maybe a few minutes of download). As for assurance that there is an actual game, yes, there is a game. A quick search on YouTube will easily confirm this.
Just wondering, what were your reasons for assuming that there wasn't an actual game? Because if there's something that I'm missing as a developer or a red flag that was set off for you, I would wanna hear about it.

I reccomended some of the things you implemented or are implementing (wether i had any part in your decisions i have no idea). I would like to congratulate you on how far you've gotten so far. I have been working on the next big update! When I do end up releasing a Steam version, I definitely do not want to lose the awesome player who have been playing for free. More details will come as the time draws near, and I am thinking of giving out keys to everyone in the Discord server (another great reason to join).
As for the Steam Workshop / modding, I have plans to incorporate these in, especially since a lot of the work with the game console easily transfers over to adding in custom items and stuff.

Hello! The next update is going to be literally game changing and is probably even bigger than movement update last year. I am currently working on the game full time, and I am hoping to finish it around early October. You can play the early version of the game from the Discord server.
The game is actually starting to add some elements of survival, but not a full on game mode.

You can press escape to pause the battle. Hmm, a settings tab in the pause menu would be nice.
The forge recipe list is procedurally generated, so there are a ton of recipes out there. I will probably be reworking the forge(again) soon.
Spikes will face in the direction you are moving in, not in the direction of the enemy.

Will I upload this to steam? The game is changing rapidly, and the next uupdate will be as game changing as the first movement update. I do want to publish this, however it could be a while.
Will this game always be free? I love free stuff, and good free games are hard to find. The steam version will probably not be free to play, however I fully intend to keep a playable, fun, and free version here on itch.io.
Can I add some archived versions? The legacy version has been made available. I currently am not handing out prior stable versions of the game, I will try and compile a list of decent game versions and then let be available to download. This will probably happen around the time of the Steam release.
How was this game made? This game was made in GameMaker Studio 2.
Will there ever be mod support? I do not see a full mod support system coming, but micro mod support, like editing items, islands, classes and smaller things like that are in mind. I have already begun giving more power to you all with the console, where you can create your own custom items out of the many many properties I have already defined.

I have received many many requests for this game to be translated into Chinese. When I do multiple language support (which is sadly a long way off), Chinese is the top language on my list.
Multiplayer could be interesting, but the core of the game is about to change once again, so multiplayer is also a long way off.
I just played through the game with a friend and I totally understand what you mean when you say the beginning of the game is hard. It very much is and I'm sorry I haven't balanced it quite well. However I have come up with solutions to directly address this issue for future updates.
More music and sound effects would be great, and I would love to polish up the game some more with a full soundtrack. I will do my best to add polish along the journey to completing the game.
More realms? While I do not think that more realms is the solution to a short gameplay experience, I have ideas to make the game more engaging in the long term. The final boss is a terrible design way of bringing the player back because there is literally nothing after you beat the boss.
Landing the game on steam? I have plans to publish this game, I am not quite sure on the timing.

I figured out my first question but now would it be possible to add a remove command to remove items from your inventory??
You can delete items by selecting the item you want to delete and then right clicking the trash. If you want to spam delete that item, use shift + right click to quickly make the item count drop.

Hello,
You can use tech by infusing it into other items in the forge. Basically put the tech into one of the left item slots and the item you want to upgrade on the right slot. Then infuse them together and voila, your tech has been added.
